Sea Approach

NOAA chart #13283 shows the approach to mouth of the Piscataqua River leading to Portsmouth, NH. A red 2.5-second flasher, whistle buoy “2KR” marks the entrance.

Approximately three nautical miles upriver is The Memorial Bridge, an elevator span, which opens on the half-hour and hour. The Memorial Bridge has clearance of 21 feet at mean high with the elevator span down, and 275 feet with the span at max opening.

A half-mile further up is the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, another elevator span, opening at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour.  The Sarah Long Bridge has clearance of 56 feet at mean high with the elevator span in its mid (usual) position, 16 feet when down (train crossing position), and 254 feet with the span at max opening.

Both bridges only open when asked and are manned 24/7.  They monitor VHF Marine Radio and readily respond to a hail on VHF Channel 13.  Opening times stated above run from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm daily.  Night openings are on demand.

Another 3.5 miles up the Piscataqua River the General Sullivan Bridge is visible to the west.  You will have to navigate this bridge as well.

The General Sullivan offers 46 feet vertical clearance at mean high and 52 feet at mean low. NOAA chart #13285 covers this section.

A half mile further west and to port is Great Bay Marine.

*** NOTE: you do need to travel under the General Sullivan bridge to get here if you are traveling from the Piscataqua River.
